About the news

Amid the swirl of news, here is something you can do to encourage the news media to do better, to “(1) cover elections like they matter more than sports;” (2) make clear the ongoing threats to democracy; and “(3) protect Americans from disinformation.” These are the messages that the Media and Democracy project is asking all of us to share with our local, state, and national media.

Clearly, if the news organizations that you follow are doing a good job, tell them you appreciate their practices, such as making headlines accurate and informative, not clickbait; avoiding speculative predictions; exposing candidates who foment division and political violence, prominently cover attacks on election legitimacy, don’t give a platform to liars, and build public trust my explaining newsroom decisions.

But to those media outlets that are failing on these measures, let them know how they need to do better.

Learn more about the standards for media from Media and Democracy Project and add your name to the open letter on that same website.

As the website says, “Our democracy’s survival requires a newroom reset.” This is about urging media organizations to support democracy, not Democrats.
